The belle-époque spa town of Bad Gastein stacked up its wooded gorge, grand old hotels tiered above the valley.

Bad Gastein,
from the quiet side

A belle-époque spa town built around a thundering waterfall, in a valley that runs from thermal baths to the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Stubnerhof sits just above it all.

A town built around a waterfall.

Few alpine towns look quite like Bad Gastein. Grand belle-époque hotels climb the sides of a narrow gorge, and straight down the middle the Gastein waterfall drops in a chain of white cascades. Its sound carries through every lane, and the town was built to face it.

Guests have been coming for the cure since those hotels went up: warm mineral water that rises out of the rock, and the healing galleries driven deep into the mountain.

The Stubnerhof sits above all of it, up the Kötschachtal on the forest edge, where the road carries on toward the national park. The railway station in Bad Gastein is 4 km below us, about 10 minutes by car.

Powder above, quiet below

In winter it is a short walk from the house to the ski bus stop, and from there to four ski areas in the Gastein valley with over 200 km of piste between them.

Local seasons, local traditions

The valley keeps its old customs. In Advent the villages hold their Krampus runs, with costumed figures and torchlight in the December dark, and the calendar fills through the year with markets, mountain festivals and spa-town events.
